iPads In Education, Now You Need Apple TV!

Teaching in a 1-1 iPad classroom I have used an Apple TV almost every school day for the past three years. I have one connected to my Promethean Board and one connected to a TV or a projector. We use it for lesson delivery but most importantly we use it for students to connect and share content from their iPads. I have been fortunate that our district (Unity School District in western Wisconsin) has a very fast and robust network that has been configured to play nicely with Apple TV. I know that many districts have not been able to use Apple TVs because of network issues. That has all changed with the coming of OS8 which features peer-to-peer AirPlay. Peer-to-peer AirPlay enables you to connect your iPhone or iPad to an Apple TV, without requiring them to be connected to the same Wi-Fi Network. Your iOS device itself turns into an ad-hoc Wi-Fi hotspot to which your Apple TV can connect. This works with iPads and iPhones and third generation Apple TVs – early 2012 (model A1469) or later. It also now works with 2012 or later Mac computers running Yosemite!

If you plan to connect the Apple TV to a projector or a board you will need an adaptor. (see the ThingLink below) If connecting to a TV you will need to use an HDMI chord but no adaptor.

So, you’ll now be able to carry around your Apple TV and stream to projectors and televisions in any classroom in any school or at any conference. Pretty powerful stuff!
